My detour into malaria has taught me something very important regarding human life expectancy.
MALARIA IS A VERY BIG DEAL.
Malaria has been the world's SINGLE BIGGEST KILLER over the past thousands of years (smallpox probably came next, then a range of "epidemics"). The reason malaria kills is not just its direct impact, but indirect (through weakening already malnourished children, and exacerbating other co-morbidities).
Malaria kills mainly children, but can also kill adults. Due to its direct and indirect impact, its influence on overall life expectancy is extremely high. No country can hope to improve its life expectancy without strong control over malaria.
But here's the problem: malaria CAN'T really be cured with medicines. Mosquitoes globally are now resistant to quinine (natural) and chloroquine (synthentic).
That means the BEST solution to malaria is to get rid of all stagnant water. MALARIA IS THUS LARGELY CURED BY CAPITALISM. Lots of money.
CASE STUDY OF SINGAPORE:
Singapore was heavily infested with malaria but over the last few decades has almost entirely eliminated it.

It required massive infrastructure funding to drain Singapore, so mosquitoes couldn't breed.
I'm now going to broaden the discussion of malaria in the PH textbook to include Singapore. I'll also increase the role of drainage in overall human life expectancy improvements from 3% of overall impact, to 5%.
Singapore has much higher life expectancy than England today, despite its tropical climate. There's nothing more powerful, as an example of how capitalism is THE greatest public health remedy.

Student uprisings on university campuses all over Iran today. Tear gassed, suppressed and yet still they gather. Hamit Coskun fled Turkey, where Islamists “destroyed” his family’s life, and sought asylum in the UK. Now he may have no option but to flee to the US if he loses his blasphemy case.
Hamit was convicted of a religiously aggravated public order offence after setting fire to a copy of the Koran and shouting “f*** Islam” outside the Turkish consulate in Knightsbridge. It was a one-man protest against what he sees as the Islamification of Turkey.
At the same time, the religious fanatic who violently attacked him with a large knife, Moussa Kadri, was spared jail.
Hamit’s conviction was overturned by Mr Justice Bennathan last October. He ruled that while many Muslims may have taken offence at Mr Coskun’s actions, the right to freedom of expression “must include the right to express views that offend, shock or disturb”.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is now seeking to overturn Hamit’s acquittal, effectively introducing an Islamic blasphemy law via the back door. It would also send a signal to religious fanatics that they have a green light to violently attack those who break the blasphemy code.
Tim Owen KC, representing Mr Coskun, told Lord Justice Warby that if he grants the appeal, he will be putting into law that burning books — any book — in central London is always disorderly.

I was 35 and I remember the exact moment my 'baby brain' switched on.
I was in front of the cold meat counter at Westbourne Grove Sainsbury's and there was a little baby in a trolley.
She must have been about a year old.
My stomach actually did a flip-flop and instantly and I mean, instantly, I wanted to have a baby.
Prior to that I wasn't interested at all. I had been focused on completing my studies and starting work as a psychologist.
But, after that moment I literally could not stop thinking about being a mother.
My feelings were, as transition pushers say, 'insistent, consistent and persistent'.
It is utterly unconscionable that 10-year olds are being asked whether they will ever want to have children.
Children between 10 and 16 are busy in the process of identity formation, establishing autonomy away from their parents and managing relationships with peers.
They have not yet reached the psychological stage where the reproductive drives switch on and start to shape behaviour.
These children are wholly incapable of comprehending, much less answering this question.
Asking a 10-16 year old if they may want to have children say 20 years in the future, is like asking a 30-year old to start to prepare psychologically for death.
It is developmentally incongruent.
And the kids simply cannot give a straight answer.
The people running the trial know this too.
