Destroying critical infrastructure - potentially a war crime beloved of tyrannies like Russia - won't coerce Iran's regime (Ukraine a fresh example), even as the midterm effect might enhance revolutionary sentiment among the majority that opposes the theocracy.
Rather, the threat signals how little was the US prepared for this war. Some mind-boggling examples:
no advance planning for the oil shock;
no prepositioning of vital assets such as minesweeping (the 4 remaining US minesweepers parked in Japan!);
no plan to keep Strait of Hormuz open (even as it had been done before - by the US itself);
no pre-forged alliance to boost air defences and naval assets;
no prepositioning of troops (marines hastily brought in now);
no concept of how to bring about regime change;
no links to, or attempts to coalesce, any organised resistance inside Iran;
no coherent plan for a deal to end the war;
no clear war aims;
no communication strategy (every day a different statement).
