„Im Regenwald Mittel- und Südamerikas wächst eine außergewöhnliche Palme: die „Socratea exorrhiza“, auch „Wanderpalme“ genannt.
Ihr markantes Wurzelsystem besteht aus langen Stelzwurzeln, die mehrere Zentimeter aus dem Boden ragen und fast wie Beine wirken. Und beeindruckenderweise kann die Palme durch sie tatsächlich ihre Position verändern!
Natürlich „wandert“ sie nicht über große Distanzen. Doch wenn sich die Lichtverhältnisse verändern, wachsen neue Wurzeln in Richtung der besseren Bedingungen, während die alten auf der schattigen Seite absterben. Auf diese Weise verschiebt sich die Palme über viele Jahre hinweg langsam dorthin, wo sie optimale Wachstumsbedingungen vorfindet.
Ein faszinierendes Prinzip, wie ich finde. Und eines, das sich auch im Leben von Tom Scholz wiederfindet – dem kreativen Kopf hinter „More Than a Feeling“, einem der größten Rocksongs aller Zeiten.
In den 1970er-Jahren ist der spätere Boston-Gründer auf einem ganz ähnlichen Weg: Statt auf ideale Voraussetzungen zu warten, schafft er sie sich Schritt für Schritt selbst.
In seinen Zwanzigern entdeckt der studierte Ingenieur seine Leidenschaft für Musik und beginnt, sich intensiv mit Songwriting auseinanderzusetzen. Als ihm klar wird, dass das allein für den Durchbruch nicht genügt, bringt er sich zusätzlich das Singen bei. Kurz darauf vertieft er sich in die Aufnahmetechnik, schließlich richtet er sich sogar ein Studio im Keller seines Elternhauses ein. Dort übernimmt er nach und nach die gesamte Produktion selbst – und wird erstaunlicherweise so völlig autodidaktisch zu einer Ein-Mann-Band und Produzent in einer Person.
Nach Jahren des Lernens, unzähliger Demotapes und Absagen, führen 1975 endlich die „Wurzeln zum Licht“: Epic Records zeigt Interesse an den Songs und bietet einen Plattenvertrag an!

In the 1970s, the future founder of Boston was on a very similar path: instead of waiting for ideal conditions, he created them himself step by step.
In his twenties, the studied engineer discovered his passion for music and began to focus intensively on songwriting. When he realizes that that alone isn't enough to make a breakthrough, he also teaches himself to sing. Shortly afterwards he immersed himself in recording technology and eventually even set up a studio in the basement of his parents' house. There he gradually takes over the entire production himself - and surprisingly, completely self-taught, he becomes a one-man band and producer in one person.
After years of learning, countless demo tapes and rejections, the “roots finally lead to the light” in 1975: Epic Records showed interest in the songs and offered a record deal!
But with this milestone, a new hurdle immediately arises... […]"
