Dear Deputy,
As part of The National Conversation on Education, the Department of Education has launched a national survey it describes as:
“A once in a generation opportunity for children, young people, parents, educators and wider society to help shape Ireland's education system for decades to come.”
However, parents across the country have not been directly invited through their child's school to participate.
If this process is truly about shaping the future of children's education, then parents - as the primary educators in their children's lives - must be formally and actively included. To date, the survey has had little to no visibility through official school communication channels. For many families, awareness of the survey depends entirely on whether they are active on social media.
This raises serious concerns about accessibility, transparency, and meaningful parental engagement in a process that will influence Ireland's education system for decades.
Serious questions must also be asked of the National Parents Council. Why have school parent councils not been directly informed and mobilised to ensure parents are aware of and participating in this consultation?
Parents deserve more than passive access - we deserve a clear, direct invitation to participate.
We are calling on the Department of Education to immediately ensure that all schools formally notify parents about the survey and provide clear information on how to take part. The survey, which has a deadline of Saturday 28-February, should also be extended to allow parents and school staff ample notice to complete the survey.
If this is truly a national conversation, every parent must have a seat at the table. Otherwise, the “national conversation” rings hollow and is a sham.
