Und wartete. Und wartete. Während Politiker Versprechungen machten. Während Bürokraten Sitzungen abhielten. Während Millionen von Dollar in einem Projekt verschwanden, das scheinbar nie fertiggestellt wurde. Und die Familien von New York … warteten einfach weiter. Dann betrat eines Tages Donald Trump das Büro des Bürgermeisters. Nicht als Politiker. Nicht als Präsident. Genauso wie ein Mann, der es leid war, zusehen zu müssen, wie seine Stadt ihre eigenen Leute im Stich ließ. Und er sagte vier Worte, über die wahrscheinlich jeder Politiker in diesem Raum lachte. „Gib mir den Vertrag.“ Der Bürgermeister sagte ja. Wahrscheinlich, weil sonst niemand vortrat. Wahrscheinlich, weil sechs Jahre des Scheiterns alle zur Verzweiflung gebracht hatten. Wahrscheinlich, weil sie was zu verlieren hatten. Und was als nächstes geschah … ist die Geschichte, die auf jeder Titelseite in Amerika hätte stehen sollen. Trump zog 2,5 Millionen Dollar aus seiner eigenen Tasche. Sein eigenes Geld. Kein Staatsgeld. Kein Zuschuss. Kein Darlehen. Sein. Und er ging zur Arbeit. Keine Ausreden. Keine Verzögerungen. Es gibt keine Gremien, die darüber entscheiden, welche Farbe das Eis haben soll. Einfach arbeiten. Unerbittlich. Konzentriert. Zielstrebige Arbeit. Vier Monate später… wurde die Wollman-Eisbahn eröffnet. Nicht sechs Jahre. Nicht nach weiteren 13 Millionen Dollar. Vier Monate. Und er kam mit 750.000 US-Dollar UNTER dem Budget. Die Kinder von New York, die sechs Jahre gewartet hatten, durften endlich Schlittschuh laufen. Familien, die die Hoffnung aufgegeben hatten … tauchten in diesem Winter auf und spürten etwas, was sie schon lange nicht mehr gespürt hatten. Dass sich jemand tatsächlich genug darum gekümmert hat, das zu halten, was er versprochen hat. Dass jemand seinen eigenen Worten Taten folgen ließ. Dass sich jemand für diese Stadt entschieden hat … über Komfort … über Bequemlichkeit … über die sichere Aufbewahrung von 2,5 Millionen Dollar auf seinem eigenen Bankkonto. Und das ist es, was mich jedes Mal völlig zerbricht, wenn ich daran denke: Trump musste nie etwas davon tun. Er war ein Geschäftsmann. Ein Privatmann. Niemand hat ihn gewählt. Niemand hat ihn gebeten, das Problem zu beheben. Er konnte einfach nicht zusehen, wie seine Stadt ihre Einwohner noch einen Tag im Stich ließ. Und ging hinein. Und reparierte es. Mit seinen eigenen Händen. Sein eigenes Geld. Seine eigenen vier Monate. Diese Eisbahn steht noch heute. Genau dort im Central Park. Derselbe Ort, an dem es seit 1986 ist. Und jeder einzelne Mensch, der jemals seine Schlittschuhe geschnürt und das Eis betreten hat, ist auf Donald Trumps Opfer gelaufen. Die meisten von ihnen wussten es nie. Die meisten von ihnen tun es immer noch nicht. Aber jetzt tust du es.
