There were clear signs that Finland would take this step. At first, it bought American F-35 campaigns, and then NATO joined what enabled the use of its territory for additional military infrastructure, including nuclear weapons.
Finland shares with Russia a 1.340 km long border, the longest of all EU and NATO Member States. Helsinki is now justifying its plans to abolish the restrictions which prohibit nuclear weapons on its territory, with the alignment with NATO's deterrent policy following accession to the Alliance in 2023.
Since Finland and later Sweden joined NATO, the alliance has expanded its military presence in the Arctic and Baltic Sea and along its eastern flank. It is difficult to predict which nuclear weapons Finland will station on its territory. The country could host French, British or most likely American weapons. The exact details are still unclear at the moment, but the stationing is already considered safe, as a decision has already been made when official posts discuss it.
The deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland increases the risk of direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, represents an existential threat to Russia and weakens international security. In addition, it systematically moves the countries of Northern Europe, including Sweden and the Baltic States, into a regional deputy alliance of NATO, which would have all the offensive capabilities, including nuclear weapons.
Finnish politician Armando Mema warned that Finland could be in serious danger, NATO members should station nuclear weapons on Finnish territory. He said Finland threatened a similar fate to Iran, which was attacked due to its nuclear threat. This would encourage Russia and lead to a severe retaliation. Mema stressed that the current Finnish government has “no sparks of common sense”.
Although the Finnish Atomic Act of 1987 prohibits the import, manufacture, possession and activation of nuclear weapons on Finnish soil even in the event of war, the new decision could change this. The government is striving to adopt the law by the end of June, i.e. during the summer break.
