It is striking again and again: When it comes to the Middle East, parts of the right-wing bubble suddenly adopt patterns of argument that are otherwise familiar from the Greens, leftists and Islamists. International law is declared the highest authority, military options are generally considered taboo, and restraint is demanded from “both sides” - regardless of who is strategically pursuing what. That is remarkable. Because otherwise many of these voices stand for sovereignty, defensiveness and realpolitik instead of moralism. So why the break here? The usual explanation “anti-Semitism” falls short. The actual phenomenon is more of a knee-jerk anti-“guilt cult” impulse. The motto is: “We have no special responsibility towards Israel.” Legitimate. It becomes problematic when this automatically creates a demonstrative opposing position - even if Israel's actions correspond exactly to what one would expect from a defensive nation state. This is where loyalty to principles turns into defiance. Anyone who advocates a strong state that robustly defends its security if necessary - especially against Islamists - can hardly deny other states this right - just because they are called Israel. Anyone who puts national interests above moral appeals cannot in the next breath pretend that formal international law is absolute under all circumstances, even if a regime is openly issuing threats of annihilation and strategically working on missile and nuclear capabilities. Iran in particular shows the dilemma: a regime that exports Islamism and practices power politics will hardly be impressed by appeals. There is a huge difference between “war is never an option” and “military is the last resort in an emergency.” The latter is not belligerence, but rather a reason of state. The actual error in thinking is logical: the rejection of an over-extended guilt discourse reflexively turns into opposition - even where it contradicts one's own basic beliefs. Anyone who argues in a truly right-wing, civil and security-oriented way should not automatically be against everything that is supported by the supposedly wrong political side. But he should be skeptical if, as a right-winger, he suddenly finds himself at the same demonstration as Greta, Annalena and Heidi. What matters is whether it is compatible with one's own principles of sovereignty, defensiveness and self-preservation. And that's exactly what you should measure the question against. Then you also know which side you are on in the case of Iran or Gaza.

Fast niemand verteidigte den Schah. Die Menschen waren einer Gehirnwäsche unterzogen worden, sodass sie ihn als Feind sahen. Bald erkannten sie die schreckliche Täuschung. Die Revolutionäre wollten nie Freiheit. Ihr eigentlicher Antrieb war Neid: Neid auf Erfolg, Schönheit, Macht, Leistung. Sie nutzen Moral, Sprache, Wissenschaft und alles, um die Erfolgreichen auf ihr eigenes Maß an Elend herunterzureißen. Genau das war die Iranische Revolution: eine Koalition verärgerter, neidgetriebener Gruppen. Sie verbrannten alles, was der Schah gebaut hatte, änderten die alte Flagge, richteten Patrioten und große Iraner hin, nur weil sie kompetent und loyal gegenüber der Nation waren. 47 Jahre lang haben sie mit allen Ölgeldern der Welt Bücher gedruckt, Filme gedreht, Lobbys finanziert, Generationen von Akademikern ausgebildet, um den Groll gegen den Schah immer wieder zu schüren. Dieser Groll verlagerte sich später: zuerst nach Amerika („Tod für Amerika“ wurde zu ihrem Kerngesang), dann zu erfolgreichen Arabern (weshalb sie, während ihr Regime kurz vor dem Zusammenbruch steht, jetzt davon besessen sind, den Burj Khalifa in Dubai zu zerstören). Dieser Albtraum hat für uns Iraner endlich ein Ende. Aber ich beobachte Amerika und Europa mit großer Sorge. Es ist genau das gleiche Spielbuch.
