As we come to the end of the #WinterOlympics2026 and all the talk is about the comparison of the 1980 hockey team to this year's team, I want to tell a story about another hero from the 1980 games.
Eric Heiden.
To this day, his five Gold medals in single events in the same Game stands as the record. It is doubtful it will ever be eclipsed.
I entered his story a few years later.
I was on the Stanford Medical School faculty in the 80s and for several years was on the admissions committee for medical school. We would get a dozen 'binders' of potential students every two weeks and would meet to summarize them for the committee for the decision process.
One committee meeting I asked to go first because, as I said, 'Eric Heiden wants to come here for medical school. I think we should admit him.'
There was a laugh around the table and it was a quick decision and he was admitted.
Few people realize after his Olympic career, he became one of the first cross-over athletes, being a founding member of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team, participating in the 1986 Tour de France. In 1985 he had become the number 1 professional cyclist in America.
Fast forward to the 2010s.
Having run five marathons (Boston, New York, San Francisco (2), and Taipei) and I needed knee surgery. Eric had become the leading orthopedic doc in Park City, UT.
So I called him:
'Do you remember me?' 'Of course I do, Steve.'
'Would you like to cut on me?' 'Yes, I would.'
No hesitation 🙂

#DuchenneMuscularDystrophy (DMD) is a rare, genetic, X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, which is essential for maintaining the structure and stability of muscle cells. Without functional dystrophin, muscle fibers are easily damaged and progressively replaced by fat and fibrotic tissue.
While several therapies have been approved for certain subgroups of patients, no current treatment is curative, and many boys and young men with #DMD still face a substantial disease burden.
