Sequoia’s first space bet since SpaceX is a company that charges $5,000 an hour for moonlight.

The U.S. Air Force gave them a $1.25 million contract. And over 260,000 people from 157 countries applied to buy sunlight before a single satellite has launched.
Their first satellite, Eärendil (named after the Lord of the Rings character who becomes the evening star), launches mid-2026 on a SpaceX Falcon 9. It carries an 18-by-18-meter mirror made of reflective plastic film that weighs 35 pounds. Once deployed, it casts a 3-mile-wide circle of light on the ground, about as bright as a full moon. For about 4 minutes. Then it’s gone.
That’s the math problem. Each satellite screams overhead at 7.5 kilometers per second, fast enough to cross the U.S. in 10 minutes. You need 18 of them aimed at the same spot to get one hour of continuous light. An astronomer at Australia’s Monash University calculated you’d need over 3,000 satellites just to produce 20% of midday sunlight at a single location. Reflect wants 4,000 by 2030 and 50,000 by 2035.
Russia tried this in 1993. They launched Znamya 2, a large mirror deployed from the Mir space station. It cast a beam across parts of Europe about as bright as the full moon. Ground observers mostly saw a flash. The program was scrapped.
Reflect’s CEO compared the project to ancient irrigation, the moment humans stopped waiting for rain and learned to move water. Astronomers see it differently. At full scale, the mirrors would outnumber every star visible to the naked eye by 5 to 1. DarkSky International, the world’s largest organization fighting light pollution, formally opposed the project. Ecologists warn it could disrupt animal migration and breeding patterns.
The company built its own 13-meter oven for $40,000 to bake the carbon fiber poles that hold the mirrors flat in space. The NASA version would cost over a million. Their office sits one block from SpaceX’s original headquarters in Hawthorne, California. 67 employees are working to make sunlight as orderable as a rideshare.
Whether the physics adds up or not, $35 million from Sequoia and Lux says someone is betting it will.
