The JCPOA was an agreement that front-loaded sanctions relief and progressively loosened nuclear restrictions. Why loosen them, if the intention was to limit Iran indefinitely/go further the next round, like an arms control agreement with the Soviets/Russia? This was the opposite. What interest does the U.S. have in ushering in a massive advanced centrifuge-powered nuclear expansion, which the JCPOA quite literally allowed, while freeing the regime from nuclear, missile, and military constraints in UNSCRs? At what point in this sunsets timeline was Iran going to agree to negotiate away the expirations? Was the JCPOA premised on a change in behavior? If so, that was a misread of this theocratic, ideological regime. That misread continues to plague policymaking, reporting, and expert analysis.

Here's a good rule of thumb: If you ever have to compare your deal to the JCPOA and argue that it is "better," then it is undoubtedly a terrible deal. ​You don't compare your meal to sh*t and then argue why it is tastier.
