Status of Iran's Nuclear Program: Achievements So Far and the Challenges of the US and Israeli Efforts to Dismantle It The following is a summary of the many achievements so far, as well as the remaining gaps. All details are based on credible, open-source reporting (primarily IAEA reports). What has been achieved so far: 🔹 Elimination of Personnel: Elimination of roughly 20 top scientists and engineers from SPND (the successor to the Amad Project), with an emphasis on experts in metallurgy, explosives, neutron initiators, and implosion mechanisms. Additionally, the SPND headquarters in Tehran was destroyed, including the nuclear archive and its IT infrastructure. 🔹 Severe Damage to Enrichment Facilities: Crippling strikes at Natanz (destruction of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant [PFEP] and severe damage to the underground enrichment halls [FEP]) and Fordow (which suffered significant damage, at the very least). 🔹 Destruction of the Centrifuge Production Supply Chain: The main production sites in Karaj, Tehran, and Isfahan were destroyed. Utilizing a few hidden centrifuge cascades that likely survived, this process would take a few weeks at most. 🔸 A Rarely Discussed Fact: Uranium enriched to 60% is "weapon-usable" material, even without further enrichment. A much larger critical mass is required at this enrichment level, so the resulting devices are significantly larger. While not practical as a deliverable weapon, it is sufficient for a crude nuclear test. 🔸 The Threat of a Breakout for a Gun-Type Test: A gun-type bomb (similar to "Little Boy", dropped on Hiroshima) is primitive, heavy, and cannot be miniaturized for integration into a ballistic missile reentry vehicle. However, a successful test would turn Iran into a de facto nuclear state overnight. Important Note: Although the industrial conversion facility in Isfahan was destroyed, converting a small amount of UF6 gas to metal (the amount required for a single test) does not necessitate a massive facility. It can be accomplished in a modest laboratory using equipment that is relatively easy to procure and hard to detect. Up to this point are the facts. Now, moving to the strategic conclusions: 1. We have destroyed most of the supply chain and R&D, setting Iran back many years from the capability to produce an operational, miniaturized, and deliverable nuclear weapon. 2. As long as the 60% stockpile exists, a rapid breakout capability for a nuclear test remains on the table. Even if this does not constitute a deliverable weapon, strategically, we cannot live with the reality of Iran as a nuclear state. Our success will only be complete upon the removal of this stockpile (via an agreement or other means), which will push Iran back many years even from the ability to conduct a nuclear test.
