Als Mutter einer Tochter macht man sich naturgemäß Gedanken über die Hürden, denen das eigene Kind später im Leben begegnen könnte – und man versucht, es behutsam dagegen zu wappnen. Doch welche Hürden sind das im Jahr 2026 in Österreich?
Wenn man der Arbeiterkammer oder UN Women Österreich glaubt, gewinnt man den Eindruck, dass der Weg zur Gleichberechtigung hierzulande noch immer lang und steinig ist. Junge Frauen erfahren in Kampagnen, dass sie trotz hoher Qualifikation schlechtere Jobchancen haben, dabei weniger verdienen als ihre männlichen Pendants und doppelt so hart arbeiten müssen, um am Ende nur die halbe Pension zu erhalten.
Dass die Lohnlücke seit Jahren deutlich schrumpft, wird dabei ignoriert. Ignoriert wird, dass sie mit unterschiedlichen Berufspräferenzen, Mutterschaft und der hohen Teilzeitquote zusammenhängt. Ignoriert wird, dass Frauen im Berufsleben formal gleichberechtigt sind und bei Bewerbungen häufig sogar bevorzugt werden. Ignoriert wird, dass die verbleibenden elf Prozent der Lohnlücke wissenschaftlich nicht erklärbar sind, stattdessen werden sie pauschal als Diskriminierung gedeutet.
Dabei wissen wir seit Jahren, was die Erwartung von Diskriminierung bewirken kann. 1979 führten die Sozialpsychologen Kleck und Strenta ein Experiment durch: Bewerber wurden für ein Gespräch mit einer auffälligen Narbe geschminkt. Kurz davor jedoch heimlich wieder abgeschminkt. Obwohl sie ohne Narbe ins Interview gingen, waren viele überzeugt, wegen ihrer „Entstellung“ benachteiligt worden zu sein. Neutrale Gesten wie Blickabwendung oder sachliche Distanz wurden als Stigmatisierung interpretiert. Das Experiment zeigte auf, dass nicht nur tatsächliche Benachteiligung unser Erleben prägt, sondern auch die Erwartung, benachteiligt zu werden.
Somit stellt sich eine unbequeme Frage: Worauf richten wir im modernen Feminismus unseren Blick – und worauf nicht?
Während wir weiter darüber streiten, wann Frauen sprachlich unsichtbar gemacht werden, wird in europäischen Metropolen die tatsächliche Unsichtbarkeit von Frauen immer dominanter. Wer heute durch London oder Malmö spaziert, erlebt, wie verstörend es ist, einer Frau beim Essen zuzusehen, deren Augen, Mund und Finger verhüllt sind. Unter dem Deckmantel der Toleranz ignorieren wir reale Zurückweisungen. Etwa, wenn Politikerinnen, Prinzessinnen oder Lehrerinnen aus religiösen Gründen der Handschlag verweigert wird.
Vielleicht hilft uns ein Blick in den #Iran, um unsere Wahrnehmung der Realität wieder zu justieren. Dorthin, wo Frauen sich echten Unterdrückern entgegenstellen, sich unter Lebensgefahr das Tuch vom Kopf nehmen und sich eine Zigarette mit dem brennenden Bild des Ayatollahs anzünden. Dorthin, wo die freiheitliche Gegenwehr daran beteiligt war, ein mörderisches Regime ins Wanken zu bringen.
Diese mutigen Frauen sehe ich viel mehr als Vorbild für meine Tochter. Nicht Frauen (und Männer), die im Schutz liberaler Demokratien permanente Benachteiligung reklamieren, sondern Frauen, die unter echter Gefahr für ihre Selbstbestimmung einstehen.
Feminismus ist heute wohl wichtiger denn je. Aber nicht, um künstliche Opfererzählungen zu pflegen. Sondern um Freiheiten zu verteidigen, die für viele Frauen weltweit keine Selbstverständlichkeit sind und die auch bei uns aufgrund der wandelnden Demografie nicht unantastbar bleiben werden.

If you believe the Chamber of Labor or UN Women Austria, you get the impression that the road to equality in this country is still long and rocky. In campaigns, young women learn that despite their high qualifications, they have worse job opportunities, earn less than their male counterparts and have to work twice as hard in order to only receive half their pension in the end.
The fact that the wage gap has been shrinking significantly for years is ignored. What is ignored is that it is related to different career preferences, motherhood and the high part-time rate. What is ignored is that women have formal equal rights in professional life and are often even given preference when it comes to applications. What is ignored is that the remaining eleven percent of the wage gap cannot be explained scientifically; instead, they are interpreted as discrimination across the board.
We have known for years what the expectation of discrimination can have. In 1979, social psychologists Kleck and Strenta conducted an experiment: applicants were given make-up for an interview with a noticeable scar. Shortly before that, however, the make-up was secretly removed again. Although they went into the interview without a scar, many were convinced that they had been discriminated against because of their “disfigurement.” Neutral gestures such as averting one's gaze or objective distance were interpreted as stigmatization. The experiment showed that not only actual disadvantage shapes our experience, but also the expectation of being disadvantaged.
This raises an uncomfortable question: What do we focus our attention on in modern feminism - and what don't we?
As we continue to argue about when women are made linguistically invisible, the actual invisibility of women is becoming more and more dominant in European cities. Anyone who walks through London or Malmö today will experience how disturbing it is to watch a woman eating with her eyes, mouth and fingers covered. Under the guise of tolerance, we ignore real rejections. For example, when politicians, princesses or teachers are refused a handshake for religious reasons.
Maybe a look at #Iran will help us readjust our perception of reality. There, where women confront real oppressors, risking their lives, taking the scarf off their heads and lighting a cigarette with the burning image of the Ayatollah. Where the liberal resistance was involved in unsettling a murderous regime.
I see these courageous women much more as role models for my daughter. Not women (and men) who claim permanent disadvantage in the protection of liberal democracies, but women who stand up for their self-determination under real danger.
Feminism is now arguably more important than ever. But not to cultivate artificial victim narratives. But to defend freedoms that are not a matter of course for many women around the world and that will not remain untouchable here due to changing demographics.
