New article by @kakape on GISAID, data sharing, & apps being cut off. It's not about COVID - it's about *all* viral data, it's about data sharing being step 1 for preparedness, response, & treatment/vaccines. So we should ensure our DBs live up that. https://www.science.org/content/article/fresh-conflicts-erupt-around-giant-database-flu-and-covid-19-sequences

SARS-CoV-2 continue to surprise us with evolutionary jumps. In this pre-print, we describe the Identification and genomic characterisation of BA.3.2: a highly divergent BA.3-related SARS-CoV-2 lineage from southern Africa. A thread 🧵 https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.64898/2025.12.19.25342658v1

Flu (+RSV/HMPV etc) doesn't have to be "super" to cause profound harm, disruption, & NHS pressure. SARS2 variants don't have to be "more virulent". Not being in the emergency phase of a pandemic does NOT mean we should revert back to ignoring infectious disease. #VaccinesPlus

“According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health, 254 people are currently in quarantine, including 43 children. Dr. Linda Bell, the state epidemiologist, says the measles outbreak is “accelerating.” https://open.substack.com/pub/popularinformation/p/as-measles-ravages-south-carolina?utm_source=direct&utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

We've been doing wastewater metagenomics for 2 years. In the first 20 months we never detected measles once. However, in the last 4 months we've detected it 10 times across numerous states. It's going endemic again; good reason to get vaccinated. https://health.hawaii.gov/news/newsroom/doh-monitoring-first-wastewater-detection-of-measles-in-kauaʻi-county/

Remembering Dr. David Baltimore, a @NobelPrize-winning molecular biologist and Distinguished Fellow of AAI. His groundbreaking work, especially on reverse transcriptase, transformed science. His contributions will not be forgotten. https://ow.ly/SU6P50WToj8

R to @StuartTurville: 3-Isolate is being sequenced but whatever it is has high ACE2 affinity.

R to @StuartTurville: 2- Tmprss2 & spike melts membranes. Alas the “chewing gum” proceeds with cells melting together and collapsing into a central mass. The “strings” then form as the high affinity with spike and ACE2 makes some areas with cells that don’t want to let go.

Star date 20th of August 2025… SARS CoV-2 Swab of the day. We saw this in the era of KP.3. What are we seeing here? Two entry factors in action…. One tethers.. ACE2… the other melts… TMPRSS2. End result. 1. High ACE2 affinity to spike makes cells “sticky”.
