1. It’s not a “Ukraine war”, it’s a Russian war against Ukraine, Europe, and freedom 2. It’s not “4 years”, it’s 12 years, as Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014. In 2022 it increased the intensity of the war, but the war started much earlier 3. It’s not the war for territories, Russia doesn’t care about “Donbas”, it wants to expand for the sake of expansion, to have the capacity to expand, to export violence outside, otherwise it knows it will be turned inside 4. It’s not “Russia vs western imperialism” because Russia wants to re-imperialise the world, to bring empires back. to end the decolonization process of the 20th century, to divide the world between the “great powers” 5. It’s not “let’s make a deal and it will be fine”, Russia will stop only when it is stopped. In order to have peace you need to put Russia into a weak position where the only option for it is to stop. Flattering Russia, suggesting compromises will only persuade Putin that his opponents are weak I said it back in 2014: the fear of provoking Russia provokes Russia. It’s still valid

On the morning of February 20, 2014, we began receiving calls on the Euromaidan SOS hotline. People were calling to report that peaceful demonstrators were being shot on the Maidan. Our volunteers went to morgues, churches, and hospitals to document information about those killed and wounded. We were sent photos of the bodies of the dead, their documents, and descriptions of their personal belongings. We were in a great hurry because we didn't know how much time we had left to identify everyone who had been killed by pro-Russian Yanukovych's regime before they would kill us.  Around that time, my husband called me. He said he was on Maidan, that he loved me, and said goodbye. I have never been so scared in my life.  A few days after the shootings on Maidan, we were preparing the first mobile group to go to Crimea. And then I plunged headlong into the documentation of abductions, torture, sexual violence, and murders of civilians in the occupied territories. I never cried over those days in February. There was simply no time. May the memory of all those who did not return live on. Strength to their families.

I am watching videos and photos from Kropyvnytskyi. Many people gathered near the animal shelter at night. The shelter was completely flooded, and people came to rescue the animals. They wrapped frightened cats and dogs in warm blankets and took them home to shelter them. The rescue operation lasted many hours. Every life is precious and must be saved. This is what this war, which Russia is waging for our extermination, has taught us.

Today I received a gift in the mail from Kateryna Zarembo. She is one of the women I admire. She sent me her new book. I don't know how she managed to write it. Katya serves in the Ukrainian army. She is also a brilliant scientist, writer, and mother of four children, the youngest of whom is three years old. Two years ago, Katya got her first tattoo on her forearm: “The brave are always lucky.” A few months later, she went to rescue the wounded on the front lines so that Ukrainian defenders could survive and return to their children. “I am not fighting. I am standing next to those who are fighting,” she wrote on her Instagram. This is a book about the choices people make during war. And these choices are difficult. Because we do not choose the country we are born in, nor the time we are born, but we do choose whether to be an honest person or not.

There are no more questions for the International Olympic Committee. There is a question for Olympic athletes from different countries. Do you support this decision? If not, will you remain silent? I want to thank everyone for all the support we’re receiving. There really is an incredible amount of it. For me, the sacrifice of the people depicted on the helmet means more than any medal ever could - because they gave the most precious thing they had. And simple respect toward them is exactly what I want to give.
