I had been asleep. For me, the #SOTG targeting analyst, it had been a relatively quiet day in the #FATC. The #SASR had been rotating in and out of air windows, meaning they had four days with helicopters and then four days without. August 28 had been a day without. It was my birthday so, with the Commando's in Helmand doing counter-nexus drug operations and the SASR on the ground, I had managed to truncate my working day, knocking off after 12 hours instead of my normal 15, had a corona and gone to sleep.
At about 0100hrs, there was a hammering on my bedroom door. It was another member of the FATC, calling me back into work. Something was happening, "the boss, needs you mate'. When I arrived in the FATC it was controlled mayhem.
‘What’s going on?’ I asked.
‘Green on blue,’ the boss stated firmly.
I sat behind my computer and started work. I plugged into the huge intelligence gathering systems, looking for information across the Australian and FVEY'S network, looking for any information of known insurgent "chatter" about the attack. I had to figure out if this attacker was part of the insurgency, if so, which group was he a part of, were there going to be other attacks. I also had to positively identify who this killer was, so that I could raised him on the JPEL to be legally targeted.
Helicopters had to be found. The SASR were going, that night, to #Wahab. There was a hard knock on the door of the FACT, when it was opened Ben Roberts-Smith walked and looked straight at me and yelled "get your shit on, you're coming with us". If there was actionable intelligence to act upon, we were going to action it tonight.
‘You don’t get to kill Australian soldiers and get away with it,’ I said.
I was informed from Patrol Base Wahab, that the Afghan soldiers had been separated from the Australians, they were in a safe harbour created by their armoured vehicles, but the situation was chaotic and intense there.
Then a chat box popped up on my computer terminal from the Commando Special Operations Command Centre (SOCC).
‘FALLEN ANGEL’
I couldn’t quite fathom what I was seeing.
In the chat box call signs started popping up. They were the callsigns for Commandos Nathanael ‘Nate’ Galagher, and Mervyn ‘Merv’ McDonald, both reported KIA. Four other Commandos were also seriously injured.
Just after the attack in Wahab, the Commandos had been approaching a poppy farm in the Kajaki fan in Helmand. As the helicopter attempted to execute a night landing, dust blew up obscuring the pilot's vision, who lost his horizon, started to flip the helicopter and then smashed it into the ground.
‘Fallen angel,’ I announced to the FATC.
The buzz of activity stopped. The scant details available were devoured by all within the FATC. They now had two large, concurrent problems. Killed and injured soldiers in insurgent territory had to be secured and evacuated in Helmand, and at Wahab a group of young and inexperienced @AustralianArmy soldiers were caring for their dead and injured mates, while staring at a large group of Afghan soldiers who they had just become rightly suspicious of.
A ‘cease ops’ was ordered. No new offensive missions were to be ordered.
Even so the SASR were able to be sent to Wahab, not to hunt but to resolve the stand-off and to show that big brother was there and, ‘give them a hug.’
After both situations were resolved and the dead and injured the absolute priority of the SOTG was the hunt for the Wahab killer who had now been identified as Hekmatullah, I had raised him on the JPEL as OBJ Jungle Effect, he was designated as the new top ‘national priority target’ and marked ‘green’ meaning missions could now be launched against him and assets like helicopters would be made available for his prosecution.
