Do they know what fires they are unleashing? If the Kurds agree to do this, it will have major consequences. The Turks will almost certainly intervene, at first with air strikes and then with ground forces. They might even get into a direct conflict with Israel, who they now see as a power bent on regional hegemony. The Iranian army will be deployed in the Kurdish region to counter these proxies. The ground war is unlikely to remain confined to the region, with Shia militias from Iraq joining the fight. It may spread much further than people anticipate: Kuwait is a short drive away. Even if the proxies backed by US-Israeli air power manage to push back the Iranian ground forces and survive Turkish pressure, that will not destabilize the regime in Tehran. It will create a breakaway province under Israeli influence. The Iranians will come back later to reclaim their territory, setting the stage for persistent conflict.

DJT just put Barack Hussein Obama on blast in front the entire world for giving pallets of cash to Iran. “The deal that Obama made giving them everything, including plane loads of cash… It was a Boeing 757. It was two of them, loaded. They took out all the seats. It was loaded with green cash… It was in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. They got all the cash from all the banks… and they flew it to Iran. I never knew a President had that power.” Those are some very specific details 👀 Hopefully Trump is laying the groundwork for Obama to be held accountable for what he did to our country.

Many babies are born with birth defects, which can affect their health and development. Some may be identified before birth, while others are diagnosed once the baby is born. With the right care and support, many children with these conditions can lead healthy lives. This World Birth Defects Day, we’re committed to raising awareness and sharing resources for education. CDC works year-round to identify risk factors for birth defects in order to support healthy pregnancies and improve care for people living with these conditions. All the worries about how AI image generation would transform the information war have come about rather quickly. Aided of course by the usual pompous preening narcissists. FWIW something about the schoolgirls story doesn’t smell right. The “Iran did it” claim is also clearly not true - but I’m not convinced it happened at all, or at least in the manner it’s portrayed, with numbers vastly exaggerated. I travelled extensively in the Middle East in my youth and I was lied to constantly, all the time. You are free to believe that a regime that bans foreign reporters and any kind of independent journalism is telling the truth about what is so obviously a propaganda disaster for their aggressor with casualty numbers far outstripping any other single attack of the conflict by miles. You are free to be taken in by AI slop that conforms to your natural biases. Or you can at least exercise some critical thinking - that claims without independent verification are worthless - if there were real photos they wouldn’t resort to AI, that no one can be sure of anything in war and a regime that routinely kills its own wouldn’t really be that bothered about lying to foreigners if its survival was at stake.

Very pleased that German Chancellor Merz is meeting with President Trump today about the way forward in Iran. Insurers are America’s favorite health care villain because they sit on the chokepoint: reimbursement, and therefore access. In @NEJM, @LeemoreDafny makes an unpopular but basically correct point: insurers are a necessary financial steward, even if many of their tools are blunt and often unaccountable for the admin burden, denials, and prior auth chaos that patients and clinicians live with. She traces how policy and incentives shaped today’s landscape, including BCBS conversions and the rise of national firms, and notes that the evidence tying ownership status to premiums or quality is not clean. She frames the problem as “corporatization.” I would say it's more because of policy choices. Tax preference for employer coverage. Regulatory benefit design. ACA rules that standardize and entrench. Medicare price setting that spills into commercial contracting. These choices push payers and providers into scale games. I agree the answer is more competition. Lower barriers for new and smaller plans to enter and scale by deregulation and then push employers to offer real choice, with meaningful variation in networks and benefits, plus reporting that reflects what high cost patients actually experience. I disagree on the utility of price controls. In health care they are politically addictive but tend to cause more unintended harms. If you want better insurer behavior, stop treating “profits” as the root sin and start treating “lack of competition” as the root problem. Insurers have terrible PR, some earned, but defanging them just guarantees higher costs with nobody left to say no.
