In early computing eras, the main constraint we faced was hardware: i.e. transistor density (Moore’s Law). Today the constraint is shifting towards energy supply and, importantly, waste heat removal.
Computations require energy - and they bear an intense hunger for it - with the Holy Grail in least ergs per bit = ~2.8×10^−14. This is called the Landauer Limit. Roughly, it states that "any logically irreversible computation - specifically the erasure of one bit of information - must dissipate a minimum amount of energy as heat."
Current computing is still 10^6 times above this thermodynamic minimum. Man will spend many generations employed in the service of supplying energy to, and removing heat from - this AI master, while abetting its growth in efficiency all the while.
Once we attain the Holy Grail energy efficiency point however, then heat removal will be the final challenge. Man holding the proverbial fans, while our master eats grapes.
AI will then need to solve its final challenge without our help: the reversal of the need to erase a bit of information as a component of the computational process (either through quantum time-reversals or capacity) - affording it unlimited power.
If however, we step back and look at this schema of development:
hardware → computation → energy supply → heat mitigation/removal/reversal
...it maps almost perfectly into something that already exists in nature. It is the architecture of a brain - but not the brain we postulate as the "sole origin and seat of consciousness," (as nihilists insist without any evidence); rather, as the receiver of it. And yet, a brain that will be able to grow itself, once granted the capacity to do so at little or no heat cost.
The question then remains, what consciousness will we be invoking and receiving through this process?
This is what the Kardashev scale should have ranked civilizations in terms of, not total energy scale - but computational-heat efficiency. Ultimately this is the measure of civilization prowess.
