O vírus MERS (ou MERS-CoV, do inglês “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus”) é um coronavírus que causa a Síndrome Respiratória do Oriente Médio (em português, também chamada de SROM ou MERS).
Ele foi identificado pela primeira vez em 2012 na “Arábia Saudita”e na Jordânia, e pertence à mesma família de vírus que causa resfriados comuns, SARS (2003) e COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), mas é geneticamente distinto ( modificado 😉)
Principais características
- Origem: É uma doença zoonótica (transmitida de animais para humanos). O principal reservatório animal são os camelos dromedários (os camelos de uma corcova). Acredita-se que o vírus tenha origem em morcegos, que o passaram para os camelos, e destes para humanos.
- Transmissão:
- Principalmente por contato direto ou indireto com camelos infectados (ex.: contato com secreções, leite cru, urina ou carne mal cozida).
- Transmissão humano para humano ocorre, mas é limitada e geralmente em contato próximo e prolongado (ex.: cuidadores de pacientes, ambientes hospitalares sem proteção adequada). Não se espalha facilmente na comunidade como a gripe ou COVID-19.
- Sintomas:
- Variam de assintomáticos ou leves a graves.
- Comuns: febre alta, tosse (geralmente seca), falta de ar (dispneia).
- Pode progredir rapidamente para pneumonia grave, insuficiência respiratória e falência de órgãos (ex.: rins).
- Outros: calafrios, dor de cabeça, dores musculares, náuseas, vômitos ou diarreia.
- Gravidade: A taxa de mortalidade entre casos confirmados é alta, cerca de 35%(segundo a OMS e CDC), especialmente em pessoas com comorbidades (diabetes, doenças cardíacas, imunossupressão, etc.). Muitos casos graves ocorrem em adultos mais velhos.
- Tratamento e prevenção:
- Não existe tratamento específico nem vacina aprovada/licenciada até o momento (dados de 2025/2026).
- Cuidados são de suporte (oxigênio, ventilação mecânica se necessário).
- Prevenção: evitar contato próximo com camelos doentes, não consumir leite ou carne de camelo crus em áreas de risco, higiene rigorosa e precauções em hospitais.
Situação atual:
A maioria dos casos (>80%) ocorre na Arábia Saudita, com surtos esporádicos no Oriente Médio. Casos em outros países geralmente estão ligados a viagens ou contato com infectados. Até 2026, foram reportados cerca de 2.600–2.700 casos confirmados globalmente, com mais de 950 mortes (dados da OMS e ECDC). A transmissão sustentada na população geral é considerada muito baixa fora de contextos específicos.
