On p-values and patterns - in light of the recent debate:
A short and to-the-point paper by the father of modern epidemiology, @ken_rothman.
He lists six misconceptions, two of which I would like to highlight:
-> One should always report P values or confidence intervals that have been adjusted for multiple comparisons
-> Significance testing is useful and important for the interpretation of data.
It would be helpful for the debate if those who promote a dichotomous view on P values and who hail adjustment for multiple comparisons would acknowledge that they are not representing "good science" but rather an approach that others consider outmoded.

Toby Green joins Frank Armstrong for a wide-ranging discussion based on his new book The Heretic of Cacheu: Struggles Over Life in a Seventeenth-Century West African Port. The book exhumes the records of a Portuguese Inquisitorial trial from 1665 into apparently deviant conduct of a half-African, female slave-trader Cacheu – the first African region to be drawn by the Portuguese systematically into the transatlantic slave trade. It also explores the role of the djabakós – traditional healers with knowledge of local herbs and their properties.
Frank and Toby discuss parallels between what occurred during this colonial period and what happened on the African continent during the Covid-19 pandemic, where a range of inappropriate policies have caused lasting harm.

Die USA haben am 3. Januar 2026 eine Operation durchgeführt (Operation Absolute Resolve), die im Grunde ein Lehrstück für moderne, asymmetrische Kriegsführung war. Hier ist das technische „Warum“, das deine Theorie der militärischen Bedeutungslosigkeit der S-300-Batterien untermauert:
1. Die „Digitale Enthauptung“ (Cyber-War)
Bevor das erste Flugzeug venezolanischen Luftraum berührte, war das IADS (Integrated Air Defense System) bereits tot.
Cyber-Blackout: US-Spezialkräfte (Cyber Command) legten das Stromnetz in Caracas und wichtigen Militärstützpunkten gezielt lahm. Ein S-300-System ohne stabile, externe Stromversorgung und ohne funktionierende Datenleitungen zum zentralen Kommando ist nur noch ein Haufen Metall.
Daten-Link-Hacking: Die Kommunikation zwischen den Radarsensoren und den Raketenwerfern wurde durch Cyber-Injektionen gestört. Die russische Technik ist auf zentrale Steuerung angewiesen; bricht diese Achse, bricht das System.
2. Die „Elektronische Mauer“ (EA-18G Growler)
Die US-Navy setzte massiv EA-18G Growler ein. Diese Flugzeuge senden keine Raketen, sondern Wellen.
Stand-off Jamming: Sie haben die Frequenzbänder der russischen Radare mit so viel „Lärm“ geflutet, dass die venezolanischen Bediener auf ihren Schirmen nur noch weißes Rauschen sahen.
AGM-88E AARGM: Sobald eine S-300-Batterie versuchte, ihr Radar einzuschalten (um den „Lärm“ zu durchbrechen), wurde sie zur Zielscheibe für Anti-Radar-Raketen, die sich auf das Signal stürzen wie ein Hai auf Blut.
3. Das Doktrin-Versagen: „Fighting the Wrong War“
Die S-300VM ist ein defensives Monster – aber sie ist für einen Krieg ausgelegt, den die USA nicht geführt haben.
High Altitude vs. Low Level: Die S-300 ist darauf trainiert, Ziele in großen Höhen abzufangen.
