We are now in a situation where the new mRNA platforms are being deployed at scale, without proper short-term or long-term human data. Some say it is simply because that data does not yet exist, and others say it is because that data is not being shared.
Because of the innovations in mRNA technology, it places a higher burden on ongoing monitoring, open scientific inquiry, and responsiveness to signals, however preliminary.
If federal agencies (@US_FDA , @CDCgov) are not actively engaging with these questions, or are perceived as unresponsive, then we are left with a difficult position:
We are continuing to use current products, and developing future ones, while key uncertainties remain incompletely characterized.
That is not an argument against these technologies. It is an argument for stronger, more transparent science and regulation.
Constructive engagement should not mean defending prior decisions. It should mean actively interrogating them, improving surveillance, and ensuring that emerging risks are identified early rather than debated after the fact.
Public trust is not built by controlling narratives. It is built by showing that no question is off limits when it comes to safety.

The book exhumes the records of a Portuguese Inquisitorial trial from 1665 into apparently deviant conduct of a half-African, female slave-trader Cacheu – the first African region to be drawn by the Portuguese systematically into the transatlantic slave trade. It also explores the role of the Djabakós - traditional healers with knowledge of local herbs and their properties.
Frank and Toby discuss parallels between what occurred during this colonial period and what happened on the African continent during the Covid-19 pandemic, where a range of inappropriate policies have caused lasting harm.

There was a big campaign before it became law. Lots of people objected, but it went through the Houses of Parliament and the Lords. Other people don't care, or think it's a good thing. It's highly unlikely to be reversed. 😔

Gendergedöns statt Klassischer Archäologie
Seit 1810 wird an der Berliner @HumboldtUni Klassische Archäologie gelehrt. Das weltweit bedeutende Winckelmann-Institut mit zwei Professoren und drei Wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeitern hält seit dem 19. Jahrhundert die Fahne einer Disziplin hoch, in der Deutschland einmal weltweit führend war. Wer hier studiert, lernt Latein und Altgriechisch und befasst sich mit den Grundlagen der abendländischen Kultur.
Und dann gibt es an der Humboldt-Uni noch das Zentrum für transdisziplinäre Geschlechterstudien, in dem 64 Wissenschaftler mitarbeiten. Fast alle sind weiblich. Sicherheitshalber leistet sich das Zentrum dennoch eine eigene Frauenbeauftragte. Wer dort studiert, lernt z.B. wie "dominante Feminismen vergeschlechtlichten Orientalismus reproduzieren" und zwar unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der "vielfältigen muslimischen und intersektionalen feministischen Praktiken für multidirektionale soziale Gerechtigkeit".
Das Winckelmann-Institut wird nun geschlossen.
