A hardware wallet PIN unlocks the device. The seed phrase is the real key to your Bitcoin. Both can be required. If you're under pressure, saying "I don't know the PIN" isn't a convincing statement on a device you're wearing.
There are antidotes that work.
The passphrase — the 25th word — creates a completely separate wallet behind your regular PIN. You give out the PIN. The device opens. It shows an empty or small decoy wallet. Your actual Bitcoin is in a hidden wallet that is invisible without the passphrase. .
